mIRC Guide
This is a guide to using mIRC for people that have never used irc before, in this tutorial we will show you how to configure and run mIRC and connect to the planetia server. As well as showing you the basic channel comands and modes. If you think something else should be added here then please mail Chaos@planetia.net
IRC is chat client in which you can connect to various servers and join rooms to chat to other people. In this getting started guide we will show you how to setup a mIRC client and configure it to connect onto the Planetia IRC server.
So first off you need an IRC client we suggest mIRC which can be found at www.mirc.com Once you have found and downloaded the latest version on their download page. Install the program and open it.
The first window you should see will look like this:

This window will show up each time you use mIRC until you register it. But dont be alarmed at the evaluation left, you can still you the program after those 30 days. But this window will be on a short delay before you can continue once the evaluation period has expired.
For this tutorial we will just click on continue and go on to the next window:

On this page you will need to fill out these details. But its best not to put in any of your real names or email addresses. You also need to think of a nick name for yourself this will be the name that everyone will see on the server. Now if this name is taken then mIRC will automatically switch to the alternative nickname which is the second box.
For example:
If you use the nick Smith, and the alternative smith` . So if you connect someone else is using the nick Smith then you will apear as Smith` .
Ok now we will move on and add the Planetia server and configure the client to connect to it. In the screen above click on the button that looks like a flower. This will take you to a new window like this one below:

But we dont want to connect to the Undernet server! so what we need to do is click the Add button and enter the planetia server details:
Description: Planetia
IRC Server: irc.planetia.net
Port(s): 6667
Thats all we need to add or change for now. If you did it right then we should have something like this:

Once you have done that simply click on the add button and you return to the previous menu. Now all you have to do now is hit the connect button and you should join the planetia server.
Once you have connected a favourites window opens, on this server we dont need this, so simply uncheck the option and close this window down.
Ok so now we are connected to the server, now the screen you currently see is the server status screen, it will show you some information when you join channels, but for now ignore that, we shall go more into that later in part 2. For now go to the bottom of the window and click, the typing cursor should appear ( flashing | ).
Now a channel or room is defined by name but also with a #,
The standard join command is:
/join #channel
The Channels on our network that you might be interrested in:
#Planetia - The main channel, any news and information will be found in the topic here. Alot of the players will idle in here and normally a very good place to make conversation
#Speedround - Planetia runs a Racer / Speed game of 1 minute ticks, all the information about the upcoming rounds will be found in here.
#Help - A place to go if you need any help with either the speed game or the normal game. Staff here will be willing to help you out with any problems that you might have.
#CService - This channel is for all IRC help and information.
Once you join a channel your screen will look something like this below:

As you can see at the top of the mirc window a new tab has opened saying #planetia, you can use these tabs to change view from one channel to another.
There will be a list of nick names on the right hand side of the screen. The list is seperated into three groups. The people at the top have an @ by their name, This means that they are a channel operater and control the channel and also have access to the channel commands. The second group is the people that have a + by their name, this means that they have limited access to the channel. And the last group has nothing by their name, this means that they have no access to the channel at all.
Once in a channel you can talk using the box at the bottom, very similar to msn or yahoo chat. Other users may not respond instantly. The people on the planetia server is a mixed community, so you could be talking to someone on the otherside of the globe. Some people still find the need to insult others, try to rise above this and not take the bait.
Other than talking in the public channels you can also private message a person for a one-to-one chat, which can only be seen by you and the other person. You can do this by simply double clicking their name from the list in the channel. Or you can type this: /msg nickname message where the nickname is the name of the person you wish to talk to and the message is replaced with what you would like to say. An alternate method would be to type /querry nickname message The only difference between this and the last one is that this one opens a new window showing your message.
Now that you have connected and are able to chat to the fellow players of the planetia community. Then this last part is a few commands, channel modes and useful Acronyms. While in part 2 we go on to registering your Nick Name with the server.
Channel Commands:
/join #Channel (Opens the channel window)
/part (Closes the channel window that you typed the command into)
/hop (Parts and rejoins the channel that you typed it into)
/topic #channel (Displays the channels topic)
/quit (closes mIRC down)
/me ( is an action command, whatever you type after the /me will be show like this *Nickname slaps T arround a bit with a trout)
Channel Modes:
these are some modes you can set on a channel if you are a channel operaror (a person with an @ by their name). All modes are case sensative so be careful when setting them
do set a channel mode /mode #channel +(mode without brackets)
do remove a channel mode /mode #channel -(mode without brackets)
+m : moderates the channel so that only users with an @ or a + by their name can talk in the channel
+s : Hides the channel from normal users, so you dont know it exsists unless you join it
+n : When enabled only people in the channel can send messages to it (so no external messages)
+k : Locks a channel so you need to enter a password to get in. When there is a password to join the channel you need to do /join #channel password
+l : limits the channel to a specified number of users
Or you can right click the main window and select Channel modes which will bring up this window where you can also change the channel modes:

Useful Acronyms:
BRB : Be Right Back
BBL : Be Back Later
PM : Private Message
NN : Goodnight / Night Night
TBH : To be honest
IIRC : If I remember correctly
LOL : Laughs out Loud (also LMAO and ROFL)
FFS : For Fucks Sake
WTF : What The Fuck?
FO / FU : Fuck off or Fuck you
AFK : Away from Keyboard
If you have any more questions about IRC then you can either join #cservice and ask there, or if you cant join yet then you can mail Chaos@planetia.net for more information.
This is a getting started guide for people that havent use IRC before. There will be other articles on other programs and using more complex commands on the IRC server at a later date.
